Heart of a Killer
A Deliciously Dangerous New Dark Romance
Author: Shalana Battles
Series: Ashenheart, Book One

Genre: Dark Romance and Romantic Suspense
My Review
Cassius Ashenheart is not searching for forgiveness or redemption. He is a morally gray vigilante shaped by violence, loyalty, and the sins of his family—the kind of man who doesn’t simply protect the woman he wants; he makes her safety his entire reason for breathing.
Melinda Westbrook spends her days editing fictional killers, comfortably keeping danger confined to the page. Then a wrong-number text and a frightening encounter bring Cassius into her life, and fictional danger suddenly looks far less intimidating than the very real man pretending to be her husband.
The contrast between Cassius and Melinda is one of the book’s greatest strengths. He is dangerous, obsessive, and unapologetically possessive, while she brings vulnerability, intelligence, and emotional grounding to their relationship.
Their connection develops through protection, late-night conversations, mounting attraction, and the increasingly blurred line between devotion and obsession. Cassius may be unhinged, but he is also attentive—and that combination makes him very difficult to look away from.
Although the romance is at the center of the story, the surrounding world gives it real weight. The brotherhood, found-family dynamic, violent history, and secrets within the Ashenheart world make this feel like the beginning of a much larger story.
The subtle supernatural elements add another intriguing layer without pulling attention away from Cassius and Melinda. There is enough left unexplored to make the rest of the series feel genuinely tempting.
For readers who enjoy protective antiheroes, “touch her and die” energy, marriage of protection, emotional stakes, and men willing to burn down the world for one woman, Cassius absolutely delivers.
Dark, intense, romantic, and dangerously addictive, Heart of a Killer is a compelling introduction to the Ashenheart series. I finished it already curious about the other brothers—and more than ready to return to this violent, emotionally charged world.
The Delicious Verdict
Read this if your ideal fictional man is dangerous to everyone, devoted to one woman, and morally flexible enough to make protection look suspiciously like obsession.
