My New Local Loves in Santa Cruz

A roundup of the places that already feel like “mine” — plus a little confession about what I miss from SF… and what I absolutely don’t.

There’s a sweetness to discovering a new town. You wander without expectation, stumble into magic, and suddenly you’re building a map made of moments instead of streets. Santa Cruz is already weaving itself into my daily rituals and quiet joys, one latte, crumbly pastry, and pastel sunset at a time.

Here’s what’s won my heart so far.

Coffee Shops That Feel Like a Hug

Verve Coffee Roasters
Yes, it’s the obvious choice. But darling… it earns it. Sunny windows, ocean-kissed air drifting in the door, and espresso so smooth it practically sings. This is my slow-morning sanctuary.

Cat & Cloud
Playful, minimalist energy and baristas who actually talk to you like you exist. It feels like the cool-kid cousin of SF cafes without the side of pretension.

11th Hour Coffee
Industrial-chic meets potted-plant jungle. The vibe is creative without trying too hard, and the cold brew? Criminally good.

Bakeries Worth the Carb Commitment

Companion Bakeshop
Their sourdough is a form of love language. The pastries taste like they were made by someone humming a tune.

Gayle’s Bakery
Over the top in the best way. Full display cases, celebratory energy, the kind of place that reminds you that joy sometimes comes covered in frosting.

The Buttery
Classic, cozy, the kind of bakery every town deserves. Their croissants are a little flake of heaven.

Boutiques That Spark Joy

Stripe
Minimalist, coastal, curated with a quiet confidence. Clothes, home goods, little treasures. It feels like the grown-up version of your SF shopping days.

Home/Work
Artsy and bright, full of pieces with personality. You walk in for “just a candle” and leave with a necklace, a ceramic mug, and a newfound sense of identity.

Civility
A dreamy blend of beachy textures and elevated basics. The fashion girlies whisper about it for a reason.

Farmers Markets That Taste Like Sunshine

Westside Farmers Market
Local produce that tastes like it was harvested that morning. Friendly faces. A little music. A lot of dogs. Pure serotonin.

Downtown Santa Cruz Farmers Market
More vendors, more bustle, still charming. I found strawberries here that made me forget my own name.

Beaches for Every Mood

Natural Bridges
A postcard come alive. Rocky, moody, and perfect for introspection or dramatic deep thoughts.

Seabright Beach
Clean, soft sand and the perfect sunset arc. Bring a blanket. Bring someone cute. Or just bring yourself.

Pleasure Point
Surfers everywhere. The water glitters here in a different way. Great for long walks and quiet awe.

Sunset Spots That Feel Like Ritual

West Cliff Drive
This is church now. The sky blushes purple, the waves crash below, and everything else in life just… hushes.

Seacliff State Beach
The shipwreck silhouette at dusk hits different. Poetic. Haunting. Romantic even if you go alone.

Panther Beach
More secluded. More dramatic. The cliffs glow gold like they’re flirting with you.

What I Miss From SF… and What I Don’t

What I Miss:
• The thrill of walking into a new restaurant before anyone’s heard of it
• Fashion that leans dramatic and unapologetic
• The fog curling through the streets like it has secrets
• BART access when you don’t want to think

What I Don’t Miss:
• Fighting for parking like it’s gladiator combat
• Rent prices that feel like personal insults
• Waiting fifteen minutes for a crosswalk signal
• The constant buzz, the pressure, the feeling that rest is a luxury item

Here, life moves with a gentler pulse. Santa Cruz doesn’t ask you to prove yourself. It just asks you to show up, breathe, and maybe watch one more sunset than necessary.

And honestly? I think that’s exactly what I needed.
