There are books you pick up because everyone is talking about them.
And then there are books that start whispering to you months before they are released.
Prince of Swords is one of those books for me.
Maybe it is because I have realized I am less interested in stories about perfect heroes and more interested in beautifully broken people trying to survive impossible worlds.
Give me cursed kingdoms, dangerous magic, impossible choices and a romance that feels earned instead of rushed.
Give me longing that hurts a little.
The world feels ready to start lighting matches.
As the second installment in Elise Kova’s Arcana Academy series, it promises to dive deeper into a world built around tarot-inspired magic, political intrigue, hidden loyalties and the kind of slow-burning tension fantasy readers live for.
If the first book laid the foundation, this one feels ready to start lighting matches.
Give me dangerous magic, impossible choices and longing that hurts a little.
I want to feel like I have been somewhere.
One of the things I love most about fantasy is not the magic itself.
It is the atmosphere.
I want books that feel like candlelight flickering against ancient stone walls. Rain against stained glass. Libraries filled with secrets. Forests that seem almost alive.
I want to finish a chapter and feel like I have been somewhere instead of simply reading about it.
From everything I have seen so far, Prince of Swords looks ready to deliver exactly that.
Immersive atmosphere
A world made of ancient rooms, hidden symbols and magic that feels woven into every shadow.
Slow-burning tension
Not instant devotion. Give me restraint, friction and a payoff that has been properly earned.
Secrets and uncertainty
Hidden motives, shifting loyalties and characters who may not even understand themselves yet.
Emotional devastation
The delicious kind. The sort that makes you close the book and stare at the wall for a minute.
Monsters are interesting. People are unforgettable.
The early excitement around the book has me hoping for richer world-building, higher emotional stakes and deeper character relationships.
Those are the things I want to become the heart of this installment, rather than simply bigger action scenes.
Because that is the kind of fantasy I keep coming back to.
The monsters are interesting.
The magic is beautiful.
But it is always the people who stay with me.
The ones forced to choose between duty and desire.
The ones carrying secrets they can barely survive.
The ones who make terrible decisions for reasons that somehow make perfect sense.
Leaving four percent for healthy emotional self-preservation.
Magic should mean something.
I am also curious to see how the tarot mythology continues to evolve.
Fantasy worlds built around symbolic systems tend to feel richer because every piece of the magic carries meaning beyond simply casting spells.
When it is done well, the world itself begins to feel like another character.
That is what I am hoping for here.
Not just another fantasy series.
A world I will want to disappear into for a while.
What I am hoping to find between the pages.
