In-Shape vs. Santa Cruz Athletic Club: A Very Unscientific Comparison

In-Shape vs. Santa Cruz Athletic Club: A Very Unscientific Comparison

For the past several months, In-Shape Capitola has been my gym.

It's familiar. Comfortable. Reliable.

The pool is fantastic. The hot tub has become part of my routine. There were plenty of afternoons where I'd finish a workout, sink into the warm water, and think, This is exactly where I need to be. So when people ask why I'm leaving, the answer isn't because there's anything wrong with In-Shape. It's because I've realized I'm looking for something different.

Recently, I toured Santa Cruz Athletic Club.

Within a few minutes, I understood why so many people rave about it. The atmosphere feels intentional. The locker rooms feel elevated. The recovery options go beyond the basics. And yes, there was one feature that immediately caught my attention: the red light therapy bed.

Maybe it's because I'm getting older. Maybe it's because I've spent enough years believing wellness was only about pushing harder. Whatever the reason, I've become increasingly interested in recovery, longevity, and feeling good in my body, not just training it. Santa Cruz Athletic Club seems built around that philosophy. It feels less like a gym and more like a wellness club. The equipment is excellent, but that's not what stood out to me. What stood out was the feeling. People weren't rushing through workouts. The environment felt calmer. The amenities felt thoughtful. The entire experience felt designed for someone who views health as part of a bigger picture.

A workout.

A sauna.

A recovery session.

A little red light therapy.

A slower approach to taking care of yourself.

That's the direction I'm moving these days.

Don't get me wrong. I'll miss the pool and hot tub at In-Shape. Those are legitimate perks, and if swimming is an important part of your routine, In-Shape is hard to beat. But for me, Santa Cruz Athletic Club aligns more closely with the life I'm trying to build.

Less grind.

More longevity.

Less punishment.

More care.

Fitness has become less about changing my body and more about supporting the life I want to live. And if I'm being honest, that's a little bougie. I'm perfectly okay with that.

Sometimes growth looks like lifting heavier weights.

Sometimes it looks like choosing the gym with the red light therapy bed.
